Are you familiar with the city of Sevierville? While not as well-known as neighboring Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, the town has a unique history and makes a great addition to your Smoky Mountain itinerary. You can expect to have a great time when you visit this area with small town charm and big city fun! To help you get familiar with town before you visit, here are 5 interesting facts about the city of Sevierville:

1. The Home of Dolly Parton

Country music icon Dolly Parton is from Sevier County, born and raised in nearby Locust Ridge! Dolly grew up in a quaint 2-bedroom cabin with no electricity or running water alongside her 11 siblings. You can actually visit a replica of her childhood home at Dollywood, the popular Pigeon Forge theme park that she co-owns. There’s even a Dolly statue in downtown Sevierville to commemorate Dolly’s impact on the area and the music industry as a whole.

2. Named After Former Governor

You may be wondering how the city of Sevierville got its name. It was named after John Sevier, who was a soldier, frontiersman, and eventually served two separate terms as the governor of Tennessee! After serving as an important figure in the Revolutionary War, he moved on to a career in politics. He is also known for his feud with eventual United States President Andrew Jackson that nearly led to a duel between the two in 1803.

3. Tends to Be Quieter Than Other Cities

One of the biggest draws of Sevierville is that it tends to be less crowded than nearby Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, while still offering its visitors plenty of fun. Here in Sevierville you’ll enjoy a small-town feel with a more laid back atmosphere. Things seem to move a little bit slower in Sevierville and the good folks of this area are always welcoming to visitors.

4. Downtown is Full of History

The small-town charm of Sevierville is most evident in downtown, where historical buildings line the streets, each with its own story to tell! The Sevier County Courthouse is one of the highlights of downtown, having been around since it was built in 1896. Just outside of the courthouse is where you’ll find the Dolly Parton statue. We recommend spending an afternoon strolling the downtown streets, where you’ll find murals, eateries, shops and much more.
